Should you use AI to write your website content? An honest answer

Ideas & Trends
The short answer

AI is useful for ideas, outlines and first drafts, but content published as-is tends to sound generic and can include mistakes. Use it as an assistant, then add what only you know: your experience, your examples, your opinions and your voice.

It’s never been easier to fill a website with words. Type a prompt, wait a few seconds, and an AI tool hands you a tidy blog post, a service page or a month of social captions. For a busy business owner, that’s tempting.

So should you? The honest answer is: use it, but don’t let it do the part that matters most.

Key points

  • AI tools are good at ideas, outlines, rewording and first drafts.
  • Content published without editing often sounds generic, and can contain errors stated with total confidence.
  • Search engines care about whether content is helpful and original, not whether a person typed every word.
  • Your experience, examples and opinions are what make content worth reading, and AI can’t supply them.

Where AI genuinely helps

Used well, AI tools can save a lot of time on the parts of writing that feel like a slog:

  • Beating the blank page. Asking for ten article ideas or an outline gets you moving.
  • Organising your thoughts. Paste in your rough notes and ask for a clearer structure.
  • Rewording. Turning a long paragraph into a shorter one, or a formal sentence into a friendlier one.
  • Checking for gaps. Asking “What questions might a customer still have after reading this?” can be surprisingly useful.
  • Repurposing. Turning a finished article into draft social posts, which you then edit.

In all of these, you’re still in charge. The tool is helping, not writing in your place.

Where it goes wrong

It sounds like everyone else

AI tools learn from a huge amount of existing writing, so by default they produce something close to the average of it. That’s why so much AI-written content sounds the same: the same safe phrases, the same structure, the same enthusiasm about “unlocking potential”. Readers have started to notice, and they scroll past.

It can be confidently wrong

AI tools can invent facts, statistics and even quotes, and present them with complete confidence. If you publish them, they’re your mistakes now. Anything factual needs checking against a reliable source.

It doesn’t know your business

An AI tool doesn’t know that your customers always ask about parking, that you once rescued a wedding cake at midnight, or that you think most people in your industry overcomplicate things. Those details are what make content feel real, and they only come from you.

AI can write a decent article about your industry. Only you can write one about your business.

What do search engines think?

Google has said it focuses on the quality of content rather than how it was produced. What it looks for is content that’s helpful, reliable and made for people, and it warns against producing lots of content mainly to manipulate rankings, however it’s made.

In practice, that means a thin, generic article rewritten from what’s already out there won’t do well, whether a person or a machine wrote it. A genuinely useful article, with real experience and clear answers, can.

A sensible way to use it

  1. Start with your own knowledge. Jot down what you’d tell a customer face to face: the advice, the examples, the mistakes you see.
  2. Use AI to shape it. Ask for an outline, or a tidier version of your notes.
  3. Rewrite it in your voice. Read it aloud. If it doesn’t sound like you, change it until it does.
  4. Add the human parts. A real example, a view you hold, a detail only someone in your job would know.
  5. Check every fact. Especially numbers, dates, laws and anything you’d be embarrassed to get wrong.

If it helps, our guide on writing service pages that answer the real question is a good test of whether a page is genuinely useful, however it was drafted.

Questions people also ask

Will Google penalise AI-written content?

Google has said it doesn’t penalise content just because AI helped make it. It does act against unhelpful content created mainly to game rankings. Quality is what counts.

Should I tell readers if I used AI?

There’s no single rule for business blogs, but honesty never hurts. What matters most is that you stand behind every word and every fact you publish.

Can AI write my social media posts?

It can draft them, and that can save time. Edit them so they sound like you, and add real photos and details. Generic posts are easy to spot and easy to ignore.
