Seven signs it’s time to rebrand (and three reasons to wait)

Branding
The short answer

It's time to look at a rebrand when your brand no longer matches what you do, who you serve or the price you charge, or when it makes you look smaller than you are. Boredom with your own logo, on its own, isn't a good enough reason.

Most business owners feel the itch at some point. You look at your logo, or your website, or the sign above the door, and something feels off. Maybe it was designed when you were starting out and money was tight. Maybe the business has changed and the brand hasn’t.

That feeling is worth listening to, but it isn’t always a sign that you need to start again. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Key points

  • A rebrand makes sense when there’s a real gap between what your brand says and what your business now is.
  • Signs include outgrowing your original look, moving upmarket, merging, or customers misunderstanding what you do.
  • Being bored of your own logo, a new competitor or a quiet month are not, on their own, good reasons.
  • Sometimes a refresh, not a full rebrand, closes the gap for a fraction of the effort.

Seven signs it’s time

1. You’ve outgrown the way you started

The logo your cousin made, the template website, the font you picked in a hurry. They did their job when you were getting off the ground. If you’re now pitching for bigger clients and you find yourself apologising for your materials, the brand is holding you back.

2. You’ve changed what you do

Businesses evolve. The bakery now does wedding cakes and catering. The IT support company now mostly does cyber security. If your name or your look still points at the old business, customers will keep arriving with the wrong expectations.

3. You want to charge more

Price and presentation travel together. If you’re moving upmarket, a brand that looks budget will quietly undermine every quote you send. People judge the price before they read it.

4. Customers keep getting you wrong

“Oh, I didn’t know you did that.” If you hear this a lot, your brand isn’t explaining you clearly. That’s a strategy problem as much as a design one, and it’s exactly what a proper rebrand fixes.

5. You look like everyone else

Put your website next to your three closest competitors and cover the logos. Can you tell which one is yours? If not, you’re relying on people remembering your name, which is a lot to ask.

6. You’ve merged, split or changed ownership

When two businesses become one, or a new owner takes over with a different direction, the brand needs to tell the new story. Running two half-brands side by side confuses everyone, including your own staff.

7. Your brand doesn’t work in the places you now show up

A logo designed for a shop sign might fall apart as a tiny social media profile picture. If your brand looks blurry, cramped or unreadable on a phone, it’s not built for how people find you today.

Three reasons to wait

Rebranding because you’re bored is like moving house because you’re tired of the wallpaper.

You’re bored of it. You see your brand every day. Your customers don’t. By the time you’re sick of it, many of them are only just starting to recognise it.

A competitor just rebranded. Their new look is their answer to their problem. Copying the timing, or the style, rarely solves yours.

Sales are slow this month. A dip can come from the season, the economy or a missed follow-up. A rebrand is a long-term decision, and it deserves a long-term reason.

Refresh or rebrand?

Not every gap needs a full rebrand. If the strategy is still right, meaning you serve the same people with the same promise, a refresh might be enough: a tidier logo, a better colour palette, consistent templates and a website that matches. If the strategy itself has moved, it’s worth going deeper. Our article on how long a rebrand takes explains the difference in more detail.

Questions people also ask

How do I know if I need a refresh or a full rebrand?

Ask whether the problem is how you look or what you stand for. If people understand you but the look feels dated, a refresh is usually enough. If people misunderstand who you’re for or what you do, you need to revisit the strategy too.

Will a rebrand confuse my existing customers?

Not if you explain it. Tell them what’s changing, why, and what stays the same. Most customers are happy to see a business they like invest in itself.

Do I lose my search rankings if I rebrand?

A new look on its own doesn’t affect rankings. A new name or a new website address can, which is why redirects from old pages to new ones are an essential part of any rename.
