What AI search means for your website

Ideas & Trends
The short answer

AI search changes how some people find you: they read a written answer first and click less. It doesn't change what makes a good website. Clear pages that answer real questions, consistent facts about your business and real proof of your work matter more than ever.

If you’ve used ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI summaries to research something lately, you’ve seen the change for yourself. You ask a question in plain words and get a written answer. Sometimes it names a few businesses or links to a couple of sources. Often you don’t need to click anything at all.

For business owners, that raises an uncomfortable question. If people get their answers without visiting websites, does my website still matter?

It does. But the job it does is shifting a little.

What’s actually changing

People ask longer, more specific questions. Instead of typing “logo designer”, someone might ask “Who can design a logo for my new coffee shop and help with signage too?” Pages that answer specific questions have a better chance of being used.

Some clicks are disappearing. Simple questions get answered on the spot. If your traffic came from basic “what is” searches, you may see less of it.

The clicks that remain are often warmer. When someone does click through from an AI answer, they’ve usually already read a summary. They arrive further along in their decision.

Being mentioned matters, not just ranking. An assistant naming your business, even without a link, puts you on someone’s shortlist.

What’s not changing

Here’s the reassuring part. The things that make a website good for people are the same things that help AI tools understand it.

  • Clear explanations of what you do and who you do it for.
  • Honest, specific detail: prices or how you quote, timelines, what’s included.
  • Real proof: reviews, examples of your work, the people behind the business.
  • A site that loads quickly and works well on a phone.

AI tools are, in a sense, very fast and very literal readers. They reward clarity and punish vagueness.

Five things worth doing now

  1. Answer real questions on your own site. Collect the questions customers ask before they buy and answer each one clearly, ideally near the top of the relevant page.
  2. Be specific about who you serve. “We help independent restaurants with branding and menus” is much easier to match to a question than “We offer creative solutions”.
  3. Keep your facts consistent everywhere. Your name, services, location and contact details should match across your site, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories.
  4. Show your expertise. Articles written from real experience, with your own examples and opinions, stand out from generic content. That’s why every article here starts with a short, direct answer.
  5. Keep your Google Business Profile complete. For local businesses it’s one of the clearest sources of facts about you.

Should you block AI tools from your site?

Some businesses ask whether they should stop AI crawlers from reading their website. You can, and for some publishers it makes sense. But for most service businesses, being understood and mentioned by AI tools is a good thing. If an assistant can’t read your site, it can’t recommend you either.

The bottom line

AI search isn’t a reason to panic or to rebuild everything. It’s a nudge towards what good websites should have been doing all along: saying clearly what you do, answering the questions people really ask, and proving you’re worth choosing.

Questions people also ask

Will AI search replace Google?

Nobody knows for sure. Right now, people use both, and Google itself now shows AI summaries above its results. The safest plan is a website that works well for traditional search and for AI tools, which is mostly the same website.

Do I need to rewrite my whole website for AI?

Usually not. Start with your most important pages: home, main services and contact. Make sure each one says clearly what you do, who it’s for and what happens next, and answers the questions customers ask most.

How can I tell if AI search is affecting my traffic?

Look at your analytics over a few months. A drop in visits from simple informational searches alongside steady enquiries is a common pattern. Referrals from AI tools may also start to appear as their own traffic sources.
