Logo, brand identity, brand guidelines: what’s the difference?

Branding
The short answer

A logo is one mark. A brand identity is the whole visual system around it: colours, fonts, imagery and patterns. Brand guidelines are the rulebook that explains how to use that system, so it looks the same everywhere.

These three terms get used as if they mean the same thing. A client asks for “a new logo” when they really want a whole new look. Or someone asks for “brand guidelines” when there isn’t yet an identity to write guidelines for.

The mix-up matters, because it affects what you ask for, what you pay for and what you end up with. Here’s the plain-English version.

A logo is the mark that identifies your business. It might be a symbol, a wordmark (your name set in a particular way), or both together.

A good logo is simple, recognisable at small sizes and works in one colour. It’s important, but it’s also just one piece. On its own, a logo can’t carry a brand any more than a signature can carry a letter.

What is a brand identity?

A brand identity is the full visual system that makes you recognisable, even when your logo isn’t on screen. It usually includes:

  • The logo and its variations, such as a full version, a compact version and a version for dark backgrounds.
  • A colour palette, with main colours and supporting ones.
  • Typography: the fonts you use for headings and body text.
  • Graphic elements: shapes, patterns, icons or lines that belong to you.
  • Imagery: the style of photography or illustration you use.
  • Tone of voice, in fuller projects: how you sound in writing.

Here’s a quick test. Cover the logo on one of your social posts. Could someone who knows you still tell it’s yours? If the answer is yes, you have a brand identity. If not, you probably just have a logo.

What are brand guidelines?

Brand guidelines (sometimes called a brand book or style guide) are the instructions for using your identity. They explain things like:

  • How much space to leave around the logo, and how not to use it.
  • Exact colour codes for screen and print.
  • Which fonts to use for headings and body text, and at what sizes.
  • How to use the pattern, icons and photography.
  • Examples of the identity applied to real things: social posts, documents, signage.

Guidelines are what keep your brand consistent when other people use it: your team, a printer, a new web designer, a freelancer you hire next year.

Which one do you actually need?

  • Just starting out on a tight budget? A well-designed logo with a simple palette and two fonts can be enough for now. Plan to build on it.
  • Growing, with more people creating materials? You need a proper identity and at least a short set of guidelines, or things will drift quickly.
  • Your brand looks different everywhere? That’s a sign you have pieces but no system. An identity with guidelines fixes it.

A logo tells people who you are. An identity makes you recognisable. Guidelines keep you that way.

Questions people also ask

Is a brand the same as a brand identity?

Not quite. Your brand is what people think and feel about your business, shaped by every experience they have with you. Your brand identity is the visual and verbal system you use to express it. You design an identity; you earn a brand.

How long should brand guidelines be?

Long enough to be useful, short enough that people actually read them. For many small businesses, a clear ten to twenty pages is plenty. Larger organisations with many teams often need more.

Can I create guidelines for an existing logo?

Yes. If your logo still works, guidelines can build a proper system around it: colours, fonts, graphic elements and clear rules. It’s often the most cost-effective way to make an existing brand feel consistent.
