How often should a business post on social media?

Social Media
The short answer

Post as often as you can keep up with good posts, every week, without burning out. For most small businesses that's two to four times a week on one or two platforms. Consistency matters much more than volume.

Search for this question and you’ll find confident answers everywhere. Post once a day. Post three times a day. Post seven times a week on one platform and twice a day on another.

Those numbers aren’t wrong, exactly. They’re just written for teams with a full-time social media manager. If you’re a small business owner squeezing social media in between everything else, here’s a more useful way to decide.

Start with what you can sustain

The right posting frequency is the one you can keep up with for months, not the one you can manage for a fortnight.

Here’s the pattern we see again and again: a business starts strong with a post every day, runs out of ideas and time by week three, goes quiet for two months, then starts again. From the outside, that looks like a business that might have closed.

A steady rhythm, even a modest one, tells people you’re active and reliable. It also gives you a fair chance to learn what works, because you’re comparing like with like.

A sensible starting point

If you’re not sure where to begin, try this for the first three months:

  • One or two platforms, not five. Pick the ones your customers actually use.
  • Two to four posts a week on your main platform.
  • Stories or quick updates in between, if the platform has them and you enjoy it.
  • Ten minutes a day to reply to comments and messages. Social media is a conversation, and replies count as much as posts.

Then look at what happened. Which posts got saved, shared, commented on or led to enquiries? Do more of that.

Pick the right platforms first

Frequency matters less than being in the right place.

  • If you sell to other businesses, LinkedIn is often worth more of your time than anything else.
  • If your work is visual, such as food, interiors, fashion or design, Instagram and Pinterest make sense.
  • If your customers are local, a well-kept Facebook page and Google Business Profile can do a lot.
  • Short video platforms reward regular posting, but only if you can make videos you’re comfortable with.

It’s better to do one platform well than four badly.

Make it easier to keep going

The businesses that post consistently aren’t more creative than everyone else. They’ve just made it easier for themselves.

  1. Have a few regular themes. For example: a tip, a behind-the-scenes moment, a customer story, a question for your audience. Themes turn “What do I post?” into “Which tip this week?”
  2. Batch your work. Set aside an hour or two a week to plan and write. It’s far quicker than starting from scratch every day.
  3. Schedule ahead. Most platforms and plenty of tools let you schedule posts, so a busy week doesn’t mean silence.
  4. Reuse good ideas. A useful article can become several posts. A post that did well months ago can be shared again with a fresh angle.

Quality beats quantity

One genuinely useful or interesting post a week will do more for your brand than seven forgettable ones. Algorithms change all the time, but people respond to the same thing they always have: posts that help them, teach them, make them smile, or show the real people behind a business.

Questions people also ask

Is it bad to post too much?

It can be, if quality drops or your audience starts to feel spammed. You’ll usually see it as falling engagement or people unfollowing. If you notice that, post less often and spend the time making each post better.

What’s the best time of day to post?

When your audience is online, which depends on who they are. Most platforms show this in their business insights. Use that, test a few times, and don’t overthink it. A good post at an average time beats a weak post at the perfect time.

Should I post the same content on every platform?

You can share the same idea, but adapt it. A LinkedIn post, an Instagram carousel and a short video can all come from one idea, each shaped for how people use that platform.
