Which social media platforms should your business actually be on?

Social Media
The short answer

Be where your customers already spend time and where your kind of content works, not everywhere. For most small businesses that means one or two platforms done well, rather than five done badly.

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from trying to keep up with every social platform at once. A post for Instagram, a different one for LinkedIn, something for Facebook, a video for TikTok, and a nagging feeling that you should probably be on Pinterest too.

Here’s the reassuring part: you don’t have to be everywhere. You have to be in the right places, consistently.

Key points

  • Choose platforms based on where your customers are and what kind of content you can make, not on what’s popular.
  • One or two platforms done well beat five done half-heartedly.
  • Each platform suits a different kind of content: images, video, short updates or professional insight.
  • Claim your business name on the main platforms anyway, even if you don’t post there yet.

Start with your customers, not the platforms

Ask a simple question: when your ideal customer has five spare minutes and picks up their phone, where do they go? If you sell to other businesses, the answer often includes LinkedIn. If you sell something visual, like food, interiors or fashion, it’s likely Instagram or Pinterest. If your customers are local families, Facebook groups and pages might still be where the conversation happens.

If you’re not sure, ask them. A one-line question at the end of a call or on an order form (“Where did you hear about us?” or “Which apps do you use most?”) will tell you more than any trend report.

What each platform is good at

PlatformWorks best forThe kind of content that does well
LinkedInBusiness to business, professional services, recruitingInsight, opinions, lessons learned, behind-the-scenes of how you work
InstagramVisual products and services, lifestyle, local businessesStrong photos, short videos, Stories showing the day-to-day
FacebookLocal businesses, community, events, older audiencesUpdates, events, groups, reviews and recommendations
TikTokReaching new and younger audiences, products that are fun to showShort, natural, often unpolished video with personality
YouTubeExplaining, teaching and showing how things workLonger how-to videos that people search for
PinterestIdeas and planning: weddings, home, recipes, craftsInspiring images that link back to your site

These are broad strokes. Audiences shift, and plenty of businesses do well on a platform that “shouldn’t” suit them, because they found an angle nobody else used.

Be honest about what you can make

The best platform on paper is the wrong one if you can’t feed it. Short-form video platforms reward regular video. If nobody on your team is comfortable on camera and you have no budget to make videos, that’s a real constraint, and it’s fine to work with it rather than against it.

Think about what you already have. Lots of good photos of your work? A founder who loves writing? A team member who’s naturally funny on video? Start from your strengths.

The right platform is the one where your customers are and where you can show up week after week.

One or two, done properly

Pick a main platform and, if you have the time, a second one. Post regularly, reply to comments, and pay attention to what people respond to. Once that’s running smoothly and you have time to spare, consider adding another.

It’s much better to have one active, friendly Instagram account than five profiles where the last post was eighteen months ago. A dead profile tells visitors something you’d rather they didn’t hear: that nobody’s home. Our guide on how often to post helps you set a pace you can keep.

Claim your name everywhere anyway

Even on platforms you’re not using yet, set up a basic profile with your business name, logo and a link to your website. It protects your name from being taken, it helps people searching for you find the real you, and it means you’re ready if you decide to start later.

Questions people also ask

Do I need to be on TikTok?

Only if your customers are there and you can make the kind of video that works on it. Plenty of businesses do well without it. If you’re curious, try it for a few months with low pressure and see what happens.

Can I post the same thing on every platform?

You can share the same idea, but adjust the format. A LinkedIn post, an Instagram carousel and a short video can all tell the same story in a way that suits each place.

Should I pay for ads on social media?

Ads can work well once you know what content people respond to and what you want them to do next. Get your organic posting and your website in order first, so the people you pay to reach find something worth staying for.
